My aim was a Wild Yam Cream that could also stand on its own as a really good everyday moisturiser for dry, sensitive, reactive and hormonally changing skin.
Our formula combines:
Wild Yam Root Extract, Mango Butter, Jojoba Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Vitamin E and Arrowroot, within a gentle moisturising cream base.
There are no added hormones, no perfume and no essential oils.
Why we chose Incicellar Wild Yam Root Extract
The source of our wild yam was important too.
We use Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract sourced from Incicellar, a specialist cosmetic ingredient supplier.
Rather than simply adding raw wild yam powder to a moisturiser, we use a cosmetic-grade extract designed to incorporate properly into skincare formulations.
For me, that fits perfectly with what Farmstead Naturals is about: carefully chosen ingredients with a clear reason for being there, rather than adding ingredients simply because they sound impressive on a label.
Barbara O’Neill was part of the original inspiration
My interest in wild yam originally came from hearing Barbara O’Neill discuss it in relation to women, menopause and hormonal change.
That prompted me to research the ingredient for myself and eventually formulate my own cream.
Barbara makes broader claims around wild yam and hormones, but research in humans is still limited and there isn’t enough evidence for us to claim that a cosmetic Wild Yam Cream alters progesterone or oestrogen levels.
So ours is not marketed as HRT or a hormonal treatment.
Instead, I took the ingredient that sparked my interest and created the type of natural, fragrance-free moisturiser I wanted for my own skin.
Why customers actually reorder it
I think this is the most important part.
People may originally discover the product because they’re searching for wild yam, menopause skincare or Barbara O’Neill — but that isn’t enough to make somebody buy a second jar.

We source our Wild Yam Root Extract from Kezzia at Incicellar, a UK cosmetic ingredient supplier created to make interesting, high-quality ingredients more accessible to independent formulators and small skincare brands. Kezzia previously ran her own skincare brand and built Incicellar after experiencing how difficult it could be for smaller businesses to source specialist ingredients without buying huge quantities. Today, her store focuses on carefully sourced botanical extracts, innovative actives and harder-to-find ingredients for indie formulators — exactly the kind of supplier we love supporting as another small UK business.
