Wild Yam Cream has become one of those products I’m particularly proud of — partly because of why I created it, but also because of the messages and reviews that keep coming back from customers who have made it part of their everyday routine.
And now it’s officially award-winning too. 🤍
Our fragrance-free Wild Yam Cream was named a BEST BUY in The Green Parent Natural Beauty Awards 2026, where hundreds of natural beauty products were independently tested and judged on effectiveness, ingredients and packaging. The Wild Yam Cream was selected amongst The Green Parent’s Skincare Best Buys for 2026.
Why I wanted to create my own Wild Yam Cream
I first became interested in wild yam after hearing Barbara O’Neill speak about it.
Barbara often talks about wild yam in the context of traditional herbal use and hormonal change. She describes the idea of restoring the “natural dance” between hormones and refers to progesterone as the “great mother hormone.” Her discussions around wild yam, particularly for people navigating perimenopause and menopause, were what originally made me want to look much further into the ingredient.
But when I decided to formulate my own, I wanted to take a slightly different route.
I didn’t want to create a heavily fragranced cream, fill it with unnecessary ingredients or position it as a replacement for hormones. I wanted something as natural and simple as I could reasonably formulate it, with wild yam at the heart of a genuinely lovely everyday moisturiser.
It’s important to make the distinction that although wild yam naturally contains diosgenin, the human body has not been shown to convert diosgenin into progesterone. Our Wild Yam Cream therefore contains no progesterone or added hormones and isn’t intended to replace HRT or treat hormonal conditions.
For me, wild yam was the inspiration — but the finished product had to stand on its own as beautiful skincare.
Created for skin that starts behaving differently
Perimenopause and menopause can coincide with noticeable changes in the skin. What once felt balanced can suddenly feel drier, more sensitive or more reactive.
So I created a rich but surprisingly lightweight moisturiser using wild yam root extract, mango butter, jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil and fractionated coconut oil, with vitamin E and a gentle olive-derived emulsifier.
There are no essential oils and no added fragrance, which was particularly important to me because fragrance can be difficult for very reactive skin. The cream is handmade in small batches here in the UK and was designed for sensitive, dry, reactive and hormonally changing skin.
The reviews have become one of my favourite parts
Something I didn’t expect was just how many customers would come back and describe Wild Yam Cream as becoming a staple.
At the time of writing, the product has 13 customer reviews and every single one is five stars.
One customer titled her review:
“An absolute staple in my routine!”
She uses it morning and night and particularly loves that it absorbs without leaving her skin feeling greasy. Another customer recently wrote that it was “quickly becoming a staple” after only a few days of use.
And there’s another little benefit customers keep mentioning that I absolutely love…
It sits beautifully underneath makeup
A moisturiser can feel amazing at night but become completely impractical if makeup starts sliding, separating or pilling over it.
One customer with extremely sensitive skin described the Wild Yam Cream as “like velvet on the skin” and said it gives her “a great base for my makeup.”
That really sums up the texture I wanted to achieve.
It feels nourishing enough for skin that needs comfort, but once massaged in it absorbs beautifully rather than leaving a thick greasy coating. That means it can work as your morning moisturiser underneath makeup just as easily as it can be your comforting evening cream.
More than just “a menopause cream”
Although wild yam is what originally inspired the product and it has naturally become particularly popular with people in their 40s, 50s and beyond, I don’t see this as a product that has to be reserved for menopause.
At its core, it’s a fragrance-free natural moisturiser for sensitive skin.
It can be used morning or evening on the face, neck and body. Customers use it on dry skin, reactive skin and rosacea-prone skin, and some even use it after shaving on their legs because of how soft it leaves the skin feeling.
From an idea to a Green Parent Best Buy
There’s something incredibly special about creating a product because I couldn’t find quite what I wanted myself, then watching customers reorder it and call it part of their routine — and finally seeing it recognised by The Green Parent Natural Beauty Awards 2026.
The award is wonderful, but the repeat customers mean just as much.
Simple ingredients. No unnecessary fragrance. No essential oils. No added hormones. Just a carefully formulated, natural-feeling moisturiser made for skin that needs a little more comfort.
And apparently… it makes a rather lovely makeup base too. 🤍
